Research Paper Regarding Transgenders in the Military

The Army’s tweet about no longer allowing transgenders to join the Army went completely viral in a couple of hours of posting and as we write this, it is now at 28 Million views. Surely a record for their account.

The ratio in the comment section is overwhelmingly supportive of the action. A clue that this ideology drove people out of the military or veterans wouldn’t recommend service because of it. Our 2,500+ comments document has many examples to show this.

The Commander-in-Chief published an Executive Order about transgenders in the military: Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness and the SECDEF published a similar orders: SECDEF stops military from paying for transgender surgeries; accessions paused and SECDEF Memo to Pentagon Leadership re Gender Ideology Extremism.

In light of all this, we are publishing a research paper written in 2023 by a STARRS associate, C. Alan Hopewell, M. P., Ph.D., ABPP, BSM who is a retired US Army Major and US Army Capt. Robert Klein, Ph.D.

Dr. Hopewell writes this current preamble:

“The Secretary of Defense, who like me served in Minnesota Army units, in Iraq, and at Guantanamo Bay, along with the American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology/ Academy of Neuropsychology, has now reviewed along with Members of Congress the research that CPT Klein and I prepared two years ago on Sex Modifying Medications and Psychiatric Standards of Fitness in the U.S. Military:

Hopewell, C.A., and Klein, R., (2023). To Conserve the Fighting Strength. Sex Modifying Medications and Psychiatric Standards of Fitness in the U.S. Military: A Repeat of McNamara’s 100,000. Combat Stress Magazine. Fall, Vol 11 # 3, pgs. 10 – 35.

Based upon this as well as other national and international actual scientific research, SECDEF has now issued guidance that “Expressing a false ‘gender (sic) identity’ divergent from an individual’s sex cannot satisfy the rigorous standards necessary for Military Service. . . Effective immediately, all new accessions for individuals with a history of gender (sic) dysphoria are paused, and all unscheduled, scheduled, or planned medical procedures associated with affirming or facilitating a gender transition(sic) for Service members are paused.”

As recruitment rates are now soaring at a staggering rate for the first time in four years, this has significant implications for the numerous Psychologists who work with Active Duty, Reserve, and Veteran military personnel.”

Read the research paper from the Fall 2023 issue of Combat Stress (pdf) or view below.

Overview: From January 26, 2021, onwards, there have been no restrictions on military service by gender dysphoric individuals, and this cohort has now been increasingly and actively recruited by the Armed Forces.

However, contrary to the requirement in Directive-Type Memo 16-005 (DTM 16-005) that 2. … “Transgender (sic) Soldiers will be subject to the same standards as any other Soldier of the same gender, (sic)” but this has not proven to be the case.

Many, if not most of these Soldiers, are currently exempted from basic military requirements such as physical fitness standards and deployment requirements as a result of a number of issues pertaining to their medical status.

This seminal article reviews medication as well as psychological issues among this cohort which may well impact their ability to serve effectively and does so from the experience of actual combat Veterans who have direct experience with these issues who have served in garrison, in combat deployments, and on sexual surgery teams.

Parallels are drawn with the failed “Project 100,000” program during the Vietnam War which sacrificed sound scientific knowledge bases for ideological purposes, with the end result neither helping those who were the recipients of the project nor the Armed Forces and eventually resulting in harm to both.
