Merchant Marine Academy Superintendent Pushes DEI Agenda

All the service academies unfortunately have caught the woke mind virus.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) is a taxpayer-funded federal service academy in Kings Point, New York. It produces highly trained commissioned military officers and mariners.

In 2022, Pete Buttigieg appointed Joanna Nunan as Superintendent of the USMMA. Prior to this, she was the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) chief at the Coast Guard Academy.

Since then:

– the first thing Nunan did was she covered a historic painting with shower curtains because some outsiders—not students—were offended by a portrait of Jesus. The painting was painted and donated by an alum of the academy after WW2. She moved it to a damp basement. Senator Cruz wrote a letter demanding answers. But he never heard back.

– The defense department rescinded the Covid mandate 1/10/23. She kept it in place until March of 2023 so that the new year of applicants all had to get vaccinated.

-She appointed Anton Tripolskii as the sexual assault director and gave him a salary of $143,000 a year. This is what he posted on social media: “We don’t have forces who do right by survivors of intimate partner and sexual violence because we don’t have forces who don’t abuse Brown and Black people. Same forces, same reasons. Misogyny and racism grow from the same white, male root.” This prompted a letter from Jim Banks, but again no response.

– In Oct. 2023, Rep. Banks sent another letter to Nunan, this time demanding answers regarding her policy that allows midshipmen to receive a military service exemption if they pursue gender transition. Again no response.

– In 2021, Coast Guard cadet Josh Roh sued Nunan and others claiming retaliation and anti-male bias after filing a sexual assault report. 124 pages detailing the assault and the bias he suffered after were documented. She disciplined him, stopped him from graduating, denied his appeal. Later there was a settlement and he was able to graduate. Not only was she never disciplined for this, but she received a promotion to superintendent of the USMMA.

In the last two years since she became Superintendent, the number of applicants decreased by 22%. She only focuses on DEI and not the crumbling infrastructure in the campus.

The campus is dilapidated and routinely without hot water. In 2024, the water tested positive for harmful legionella bacteria, which causes legionnaire’s disease.

A 2024 GAO report issued a scathing finding. Poor campus conditions, a lack of leadership and managing the facilities. She discussed to bring on a consultant and having a discussion with “stakeholders.”

This is just one tiny example of what is going on in our military under the willfully unqualified leadership of the DEI cult in charge of our military.

If we don’t make changes and make them fast, it is going to end very badly for us.

I’m wondering why the Republican senators are spending all of their time on baseless anonymous allegations instead of calling to light what’s really going on our military. And you should be wondering the same thing.
