BOOK REVIEW | The Truth: Stranger—and More Dangerous—Than Fiction

By Lt. Col. Eric Vogel, USAF ret, USAFA ’73
STARRS Ambassador and Connecticut State Leader

Hey, I’m no f—ing criminal, man. I’m no puta or thief. I’m Tony Montana, a political prisoner from Cuba. And I want my f—ing human rights, now!…Just like the President Jimmy Carter says. Okay?
–Scarface, to immigration control officers in the eponymous movie

The evil was all there, as depicted in the 1983 movie Scarface: 25,000 criminals released from Castro’s jails among the 125,000 refugees of the 1980 Mariel Boatlift, murderers and major drug-dealers included, bringing with them their duplicity, their demands, an escalation in crime and an increase in the destruction of American lives.

Although the film was largely fiction, we should have paid attention.

Forty plus years later, all the malevolence—and then some—are here again; this time the story is true, completely non-fiction.

The situation is even worse, much worse: just over 100,000 Cubans is a miniscule number, compared to ten million illegals, most of them “processed” in and insufficiently vetted during the Biden Presidency.

This time, Maduro of Venezuela emptied his jails. All of this was truly an invasion and played a major role in the attacks on our Constitutional Republic.

The goal is a cultural and political revolution in the 21st century, rooted in classic Marxist ideology.

Peter Schweizer documents this truth, details the plans and discusses the major participants in The Invisible Coup: How American Elites and Foreign Powers Use Immigration as a Weapon.

We learn that our neighbor Mexico is definitely not our friend. And neither is China—but that’s been obvious for years. Islamists are aligned with Progressives (“The Red-Green Axis”) with goals contrary to the long term strength of our government.

Some politicians are connected to—even aligned with—drug cartels. Pope Francis, with his return to the 1960s “liberation theology” of South America, participated in organizations and movements pushing against capitalism, the West, and—ultimately—the United States.

Although originating from different backgrounds and historical periods, these groups unite, when practical, to pursue their goals, with the ultimate common purpose of destroying the present order of our country.

As described in the subtitle, the book is a survey of How American Elites and Foreign Powers Use Immigration as a Weapon on the path to a coup. The content is shocking and serves as a wake-up call.

Schweizer writes that Mexico’s political elite have a profound cultural resentment toward the United States. Mass migration is part of their program for change in the United States.

Reconquista—return of territory ceded to the U.S. by the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe—must happen.  Immigrants in the U.S.—legal or illegal—must remain Mexican in their heart and in their very being; assimilation is out of the question.

With over 50 consulates in the U.S.—all tied to various groups, such as La Raza and LULAC, some more radical than others—the Mexican government works to support the concept of Reconquista by influencing U.S. politicians, policy, and even elections.

Schweizer provides detailed proof of a plot, begun during the Clinton administration, to increase immigration as a means to provide additional voters for the Democratic Party.

A Los Angeles priest, Father Miguel Vega of the Industrial Areas Foundations (IAF), a radical Saul Alinsky group, pushed for this movement in a letter to the President in 1996. Henry Cisneros, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development assisted, as did INS Commissioner Doris Meissner and Deputy White House Chief of Staff Harold Ickes.

The Clinton Administration loved the idea.  FBI checks for criminal records were “tossed aside,” the English-language test was dropped, and the civics exam was “dumbed down.”  And voila: 1.2 million new citizens in 1996, 85% of whom voted for the Clinton-Gore ticket.

Many might call this shameful; Schweizer labels it a “travesty.” But even that action pales in comparison with what followed during the Biden Administration, with immigrants used as “a weapon pointed at us.”

China is another country posing a threat through immigration; Schweizer details the danger of a “Manchurian Generation.”

The birth tourism industry for the Chinese is huge and growing. Of course, the intent is to obtain birthright citizenship. Birth tourism companies in both the U.S. and China are thriving; many of their clients are among the Chinese elite. After birth, the newborn citizens return with their parents to China; many grow up there, with the right to return to the United States. At age 21, these citizens can apply for residency for their parents.

This particular immigration travesty was “encouraged” by the Obama Administration and “exploded” during Obama’s years in office.

Three other programs connected to the Chinese threaten us with long-term dangers. All three present opportunities for espionage. Furthermore, they offer opportunities to exert influence on U.S. politics, through political connections and financial backing.

First, through the use of IVF (In Vitro Fertilization), Chinese parents use American surrogate mothers in order to have their children born in the States.  Similar to birth tourism, this program is growing by leaps and bounds. The goal is the same: birthright citizenship.

Second, The EB-5 (Employment-Based Fifth Preference) investor program allows wealthy Chinese to obtain permanent residence status and live in the U.S. The concept, when the program was created, was to increase investment and therefore jobs in the U.S.

Like so many government programs, the devil is in the details, and there are unintended consequences. Ninety percent of the applicants come from China. This program is another means for foreign countries to influence elections. Furthermore, “the program is rife with fraud and a lack of oversight.”  In fact, “Criminals and spies” can become permanent residents “with impunity.”

Finally, thousands of Chinese pilots are trained in the U.S. every year, many at the former Castle Air Force Base in California. These students are allegedly civilians. The truth is, we “are helping the Chinese military enhance its aviation power…ignoring the inherent danger.”

In the chapter “Importing the Revolution” Schweizer examines the threat of Muslim immigration. He is careful to differentiate between the “Muslim Brotherhood specifically and Islamists in general” and “mainstream Muslims,” stating that “All Islamists are Muslim, but not all Muslims are Islamists.”

John Guandolo, former Marine Officer and FBI Special Agent specializing in counterterrorism, spoke at a recent STARRS Town Hall and is not so sanguine (see https://starrs.us/starrs-town-hall-the-threat-of-the-red-green-axis-with-speaker-john-guandolo/). We must be wary of the connections between leading Islamist/Muslim leaders, and the Muslim Brotherhood itself. Some of those Islamist leaders have even served as advisors to both Democratic and Republican administrations.

While Islamic advisors—at a level as high as the White House—push the narrative that it is only the “Islamic Extremists” who are the real danger, Guandolo begs to differ. There are threats to our country, even at lower levels of militancy, and even in the teachings of Islam itself. Just this month, the U.S. declared the branches of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon, but not the Muslim Brotherhood itself, as Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGT). Meanwhile, the state of Texas has designated the overall Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization.

Schweizer does, however, offer criticisms of Muslim activists. He cites the “Civilization-Jihadist Process” section of a strategic goals document belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood. In it is a description of immigration:

“Members ‘must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within…and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions.’” (MB Strategic Goals for North America, see PDF page 21)

Also from the Muslim Brotherhood: “Jihad is our way.” There are a number of less strident Islamic groups mentioned by Schweizer which may be associated with the Brotherhood, even if informally, by the overlap of policy and participants. The lines between organizations can be blurred. The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), for example, has ties to Hamas.

Linda Sarsour, a “prominent progressive-Islamist activist,” was often involved with the Obama administration. She is currently head of the Arab-American Association of New York and refers to Imam Siraj Wahhaj, unindicted coconspirator of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, as her “mentor and backer.”

As an example of the “Red-Green Axis”—discussed during STARRS Zoom meetings—she is allied with congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and recently appeared with her at the Sixteenth Annual Universal Muslim Association of America conference.

Their “common cause” is their “rejection of American values,” an alliance that—of course—does not cover gay rights, abortion, and feminism. Similar to the Mexican immigrant narrative, Sarsour believes that Muslim immigrants must never assimilate into American culture and values.

Progressives are not linked with only Islamists; both American and Latin American politicians have ties to drug cartels.

In 2018, Senator Bernie Sanders announced his Progressive International organization. Created by his nonprofit Sanders Institute, its purpose was to form a “global movement…to end capitalism…” Mass migration was to be supported by “cross-border political collaboration by progressives.”

This cross-border cooperation provided links to foreign progressives who were, in turn, linked to drug cartels. Rafael Correa, for example, who left the Ecuadorean Presidency in 2017, serves as an advisor to the Progressive International Council, while doing” favors for the drug cartels and human traffickers.”

Even Pope Francis has ties to the “invisible coup.” He was all for collectivist values and spoke out against “individualism, freedom and a market economy.” Of course, mass immigration and social justice were to be pursued, in some cases assisted by the George Soros funding of organizations favored by the Pope.

This very fine book is a must-read for participants in the STARRS group; its theme of an invisible coup with an undercurrent of Marxism resonates with our discussions, many of the books on our website, and the American’s Creed presentations. While the author does not constantly harp on Marxism, its influence is evident throughout the book.

We also periodically read of specific Marxist connections in The Invisible Coup. These should be recognized by all with an interest in STARRS.

For example, textbooks shipped by the Mexican government to American schools tell their version of our history and are based on the writings of Brazilian Marxist Paulo Freire, author of Pedagogy of the Oppressed. Juan Carlos Scannone, mentor and seminary teacher to Pope Francis, wrote that the Pope “partially embraced ‘the Frankfurt School of thinking.’”

At the first World Meeting of Popular Movements, created by Pope Francis, there was “a call for the canonization of Antonio Gramsci.”The Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) worked “aggressively with illegal immigrants”; it was a Saul Alinsky-created (author of Rules for Radicals, dedicated to Lucifer) and -inspired organization.

Finally, the concept of immigration being used as weapon is reminiscent of STARRS discussions on “non-kinetic warfare” and the major theme of non-traditional combat in Unrestricted Warfare (https://starrs.us/the-new-total-marxist-war/).

What to do? Schriever makes several excellent suggestions in his section on “Fighting Back.”

The first step is acknowledging the reality of the threat. Then, among his ideas:

  • ban dual citizenship;
  • make the vetting of immigrants more rigorous, while incorporating “ideological scrutiny”;
  • “ban birth tourism and surrogacy as a means of citizenship”;
  • restrict the participation of foreign individuals and organizations in our politics by enforcing current laws;
  • and, of course, improve and increase congressional oversight of citizenship.

As concerned citizens, let’s add a suggestion of our own: clarify, make known, and enforce immigration law. Change it, if necessary and/or desired, but in accordance with Federal Law and the rules of Congress. Let’s live by the law and stop operating by executive orders and confusing, changing policies from administration to administration.

We are under attack. Let’s pay attention to what is being done and what is being said, while remembering:

From Tony Montana, Scarface—“I always tell the truth, even when I lie.”

From Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas—“The border is closed. The border is secure.”

Most importantly, from Cicero, in the epigraph of The Invisible Coup—“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within…He rots the soul of the nation…The traitor is the plague.”
