The New Total Marxist War

Terrorism, Treason, Lawlessness, and Attacks on the American’s Creed

By Lt. Col. Eric Vogel, USAF ret, USAFA ’73

“What’s Going On [?]”  (1)

A Chinese spy balloon overflies the U.S., uninterrupted until reaching the East Coast. Seaport cranes, manufactured in China, are found to have spyware installed. Chinese corporations and individuals buy up American land, including properties close to military bases.

Charlie Kirk is assassinated. An elementary school teacher in Illinois mocks his death with a hand “pistol” gesture to her neck during a “No Kings” rally. (2)  Late night TV hosts make light of his murder.

Tens of millions of illegal immigrants cross the southern border, unabated and unvetted, during the years of the Biden Administration. This occurs while Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security, insists that the border is closed. (3)

Many of these immigrants–especially the Chinese–are suspected of being spies. Mexican cartels thrive. Drugs, mainly deadly fentanyl, are transported into the U.S. with ease. Woman and children are trafficked.

In wartime, these gross violations of our border would be considered an invasion. (4)

So, what is going on?

Perhaps President Jimmy Carter offered a partial clue in his famous “Malaise” speech in 1979, a speech which was largely about the Energy Crisis but which was centered on a “Crisis of Confidence.” (5)

President Carter summed up the advice he received from citizens with a quote from one particular individual: “Mr. President, we are confronted with a moral and spiritual crisis.” Carter then went on to speak about a

“fundamental threat to American Democracy…It is a crisis of confidence…We can see this crisis in the growing doubt about the meaning of our lives and the loss of a unity of purpose for our nation…there is growing disrespect for government and churches and schools, the news media, and other institutions…” (6) (emphasis added)

Carter’s comments addressed an internal threat which is still with us, more than 45 years later.

Other threats, both foreign and domestic, are part of a new total war which dates from the late 20th century. Just such a war was described in a book written 25 years ago by two Chinese military officers.

This new total war extends beyond traditional military battles, and includes growing domestic threats, an increase in treasonous acts, and disrespect for the rule of law.

Considered together, all these events confirm that The American’s Creed is under attack.

The Threat of War Without Restrictions

Unrestricted Warfare by Colonel Qiao Liang and Colonel Wang Xiangsui of the People’s Liberation Army is a frightening and thorough treatise on war, as seen by our primary adversary, China. (7)

Published in early 1999, it is a combination of a critique of the U.S. military, including its performance in Desert Storm, a thorough description of China’s strategy in unrestricted war, and an overall warning of what we in America are facing twenty five years after its publication.

According to the authors, Americans are “slaves to technology.” We love new weapons systems, but there is a perennial mismatch in the timeline of weapons development and military strategy. (8)

This characteristic of the American military–incredible spending on weapons, combined with a fear of losing lives–is examined in the section titled “The Illness of Extravagance, and Zero Casualties.” The Gulf War, according to the authors, was “like killing a chicken with a bull knife.”

Technology and globalization have drastically “blurred the face of war.” Warfare now “transcends all boundaries and limits…[and] the battlefield will be everywhere,” including “military operations other than war,” and involving participants well beyond the traditional categories of soldiers, sailors and airmen.

Hackers, members of non-state organizations (including international terrorist organizations; Osama bin Laden is cited), powerful individuals in the world of finance (e.g. George Soros), global financial firms and the media, among others, are all players in total warfare. Markets can be moved, digital information can be compromised, and populations can be swayed. (9)

Unrestricted Warfare lists more than twenty types of “Military, Trans-Military and Non-military” warfare which can be combined to achieve a nation’s goals.

Among the twenty-four types of warfare are:

  • Conventional
  • Diplomatic
  • Financial
  • Trade
  • Ecological
  • Space
  • Sanction,
  • Drug
  • Media
  • Virtual
  • Ideological
  • Terrorist and Guerilla

The “struggle for victory will take place on a battlefield beyond the battlefield…The [necessary new] method is to create a complete military Machiavelli…Achieve objectives by fair means or foul, that is [his] most important spiritual legacy.”

An outsider’s view of one’s own country, as exemplified by Frenchman Alexis de Tocqueville’s observations of life in the United States in the early 19th century, can be valuable–if acknowledged and studied by leaders of a nation. (10)

In the case of this book, the authors–in their criticisms and warnings–have provided a critical service to our government, particularly the Department of War, by exposing our weaknesses. (11)

What is more, they have opened a window on in-depth Marxist/Maoist thinking regarding warfare–a new, total, Marxist war. (12)

Domestic Terrorism

The guerilla, terrorist and ideological aspects of warfare are sometimes combined in the new total war. No Place to Hide; the Strategy and Tactics of Terrorism is an outstanding documentary discussing all three. (13)

Produced in 1982, it predates Unrestricted Warfare by almost twenty years, yet it is still applicable to various threats to the United States today.

Furthermore, the film, in discussing Marxist-Leninist ties to the groups depicted, underlines the dominant threat of Marxism to our nation.

In the introduction, Congressman Lawrence McDonald of Georgia calmly, but boldly, sums up the threat:

“Yes, we are at war, and have been—an economic war, a war of subversion, a war of espionage, a war of ideas and a war of terror and infiltration.”

No Place to Hide describes the Students for a Democratic Society and the Weather Underground of the United States, as well as the Red Brigade (Italy), the Red Army Faction (Germany), and the Provisional IRA (Northern Ireland).

These groups did not operate in isolation; they were “intertwined,” possessing an “international nature, with training provide by the same sources, the Soviets and Eastern Europe, in Terrorist Training Centers.”

Their leaders were predominantly Marxist-Leninist, usually middle and upper class, and “privileged…not working class products.” (14) The narrator states that the words they used came “with a different meaning than they seemed to have.”

These groups developed terror and psychological strategies for their war. The Minimanual of the Urban Guerilla was a popular guide. (15)

The goal was to undermine the government by having the public react negatively to a government’s actions against the terrorist group; the government is then seen to be unjust.

“Action is in reaction”; the government’s reaction, seen as repressive, encourages others to join “the revolution.”

Antifa, anyone?  Or how about the violent anti-Semitic protests on college campuses, violating students’ rights, led by illegal immigrants, and funded and organized by pro-Palestinian groups?

A fascinating–and very disturbing–portion of the documentary serves as a stark warning of the long term goal of these Marxist groups. Larry Grathwohl, who had infiltrated the Weather Underground , describes their sinister plan in the film: there would have to be reeducation camps in the Southwestern  United States after the revolution. (16) If individuals could not be reeducated, they would have to be killed, perhaps as many as 25 million. (17)

(Page from Re-Remembering the Mis-Remembered Left: The Left’s Strategy and Tactics To Transform America):

Two members of Congress appear at the end of the documentary. They offered three warnings in 1982, still applicable today:

  • we must wake up and focus on awareness;
  • we must rebuild and strengthen the international security system, while maintaining Constitutional order in our country; and
  • we must recognize that much of terrorism is linked together in an international conspiracy.

Treason & “Treasonous Acts”

Could U.S. citizens, members of a terrorist group, participating in actions against our country or its government be accused—and convicted—of Treason, according to Article III, Section 3, of the U.S. Constitution? (18) Perhaps not, based on the stringent criteria of the Constitution and court decisions further refining those criteria. (19)

Nevertheless, domestic terrorist actions should certainly be considered treasonous—crimes of betrayal and disloyalty to our country.

Retired Air Force Academy Professor Brig. General: “We are ANTIFA”

Furthermore, these actions, especially when part of an international conspiracy with Marxist roots—often the case–could be considered as levying war, although a domestic war, against our country.

Treasonous crimes, as opposed to Treason itself, have proliferated since the late 20th century, especially during the Obama and Biden Administrations.

These activities include the use of the IRS and other government agencies to punish conservative organization, unconstitutional diktats during the COVID-19 crisis, the failure to enforce border law and protect Americans from criminal activity by Mexican cartels, and others (20).

Manipulation of election computer accounts during the 2016 and 2020 elections, and the sordid Russiagate affair, are two of the most flagrant examples. (21)

If these crimes do not all under the Treason of Article III, Section 3, of the Constitution, perhaps Federal or State Election Laws, or 18 U.S. Code Chapter 115–Treason, Sedition, and Subversive Activities, could be used to prosecute those involved. (22)

In late October, documents obtained by whistleblowers exposed the work of “Arctic Frost,” a project of Biden’s Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation. This program targeted Biden administration “enemies,” including the illegal wiretapping of the phones of leading Republicans. If not definitively Treason, these are certainly treasonous acts. (23)

Disrespect for the Rule of Law

Another feature of the domestic battleground of the new total war is progressive deterioration of respect for the rule of law. (24) The rule of law, a fundamental concept of the Federalist Papers, our founding documents, and the 20th century American’s Creed, Is increasingly being disrespected and ignored.

For example, under Federal Law, marijuana is listed as a Schedule 1 drug, along with heroin and LSD. (25) Twenty-four states, under state law, allow recreational use. Forty-seven allow medical use of cannabis. State laws regarding the use of marijuana in just three states—Idaho, Kansas and Wyoming—remain aligned with Federal Law.

The fact that many state marijuana laws counteract Federal Drug Law is of little concern to most Americans, but serves as an example of conflict in the rule of law. (26) Other conflicts, however, are much more serious. Some even exemplify battles in a domestic war.

Immigration warfare is definitely a threat. Numerous recent events have recently shown that the concept of sanctuary cities, counties and states has severely impeded the actions of ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to enforce immigration law, specifically by deportation.

The support for “sanctuaries” has flipped the whole concept of law enforcement;  those individuals who have committed serious crimes (rape, murder, child molestation, etc.) and who are here illegally—some having been previously deported—are protected, while ICE agents are under attack.

Groups have been formed to warn migrants of the presence of ICE (some using whistles–reminiscent of animals in the wild signaling each other, by sound, of the presence of danger) while others monitor their activity. Congressional Democrats recently proposed creating a tracking system for ICE agents.

Ideological warfare, listed in Unrestricted Warfare as a part of overall total war, is related to violations of the rule of law.

The Declaration of Independence, in mentioning “the laws of nature and of nature’s God” is referring to natural law and the universal moral law of mankind. As such, the natural law can be considered to extend beyond civil law to moral, even Divine Law, which is “written in men’s hearts.” This natural law, being universal, should be known—deep down—by all, but is oftentimes unacknowledged, overlooked, or ignored.

Overt violation of natural law can lead to ideological warfare.

Witness the societal confusion and cultural battles regarding transgenderism, a malignant corruption of a legitimate diagnosis of gender dysphoria. (27) The belief that a person can “transition” to the opposite biological sex, in clear violation of natural law, has led to a great divide in our country, a conflict reaching the highest levels of all three branches of government.

We are in the midst of a cultural war over a wedge issue in our society and politics. Division by identity group, a fundamental element of cultural Marxism, is in full swing.

Even classic, timeless oaths are being blatantly upended.

With the proliferation of puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries as part of the transgender battle, a great many medical doctors have violated the Hippocratic Oath, “Do No Harm.” (28) Many psychologists have joined with psychiatrists in supporting “transitioning,” leading one to wonder where a questioning individual turns for help and balanced, unbiased counseling.

Teachers unions (American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association) have joined the fray. School boards echo their support.

The enemies? Parents who do not support their child’s choice to “transition” (the department of children and family services in some states is authorized to remove the child from the parents’ home), communities opposed to boys in girls’ sports, and anyone who dares speaks out in rational support of natural law.

Speaking of oaths, has the oath of commissioning of officers become just a set of words? What about the part supporting and defending the Constitution, the founding document that states that the President is the Commander in Chief?

How many officers in recent years have spoken out against the President and disobeyed, or ignored, his orders (Executive Orders and others passed down through command), notably those regarding DEI and CRT?

Houston, we have a Marxist problem in the military

The US Military Has an Extremism Problem and Charlie Kirk’s Murder Put It Under the Spotlight

State Attorneys General, District Attorneys and Prosecutors in many jurisdictions choose to not enforce laws. The policy of cashless bail has resulted in more crime in New York City.

More and more, serious crimes go unpunished. Yet Congresswoman Jasmine Crocket opines: “Just because someone has committed a crime, it doesn’t make them a criminal.” (29)

As Miranda Devine wrote, “Lawlessness is a Choice,” an insightful observation on an often-used tactic in this total Marxist war in the U.S.

Attacks on the American’s Creed

William Taylor Page, an American public servant in Washington, D.C., authored The American’s Creed in 1917.

Passed as a resolution on April 3, 1918 by the U.S. House of Representatives, it offers a classic summary of what we believe as American citizens, describing our government and listing the key principles of our nation. Notably, it includes the duties to our country. (30)

A quick read, while keeping the warfare just described in mind, leaves no doubt that the Creed is under attack as part of a total war, one inspired by the growing presence of Marxism in our country’s institutions.

We believe in a “sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect union, one and inseparable…” How separated we have become, under attack and divided by identities and interests and beliefs. States are divided, more than ever, as issues such as immigration, transgender policies, abortion, law enforcement (or lack thereof), DEI/CRT, and educational standards differ from state to state, and from Federal law and policy.

The “principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity…” are no longer accepted by all as having the same meaning as when these words were written by William Taylor Page–or when they were considered in the writing of our founding documents.

“Freedom” is considered by many to mean having the opportunity to do whatever they want to do, versus the nobler concept of the opportunity to do what they ought to do, unencumbered by government. Where was true freedom during the Covid-19 lockdowns, with churches closed (and liquor stores open) and vaccinations required?

“Equality” has been replaced by a focus on “Equity,” to the detriment of the beauty of meritocracy and the justice of the declaration that “all men are created equal.” And where is the humanity on college campuses when students’ rights to assemble, speak and study–regardless of religion–are blatantly violated?

According to the Creed, it is our duty to love our country, “to support its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies.”  Page succinctly describes the elements of our duty as Americans, yet how often are these duties ignored in the Twenty-first century?

Regarding the Constitution, are we supporting it when we consider it as a “living, breathing document”? (31) Are we considering domestic enemies when we are called to defend our nation “against all enemies?”

This is What’s Going On

We are at war, a total Marxist war.

The warning comes straight out of Unrestricted Warfare:

“When we suddenly realize that all these non-war actions may be the new factors constituting future warfare, we have to come up with a new name for this new form of war: Warfare which transcends all boundaries and limits, in short: unrestricted warfare.” (32)

Clearly, the United States of America is under attack, whether we realize it or not.

The hidden enemy is Marxism and the attacks are numerous and increasing, although sometimes manifested in subtle ways.

A surge of awareness is imperative for the defense of our beloved country of The American’s Creed.
