Tata: Dept. of War has welcomed back 500+ warfighters and delivered $21M+ in backpay

X Post by Under Secretary of War for Personnel and Readiness Anthony J. Tata, retired US Army Brig. General, USMA 1981:

Last September, @SecWar and I hosted a powerful listening session with Service members and veterans impacted by the COVID-19 vaccine mandate.

Today, @DeptofWar has welcomed back 500+ warfighters and delivered $21M+ in backpay.

We continue to reach back out to every veteran whose career was cut short to encourage reinstatement before the Apr. 1, 2027 deadline.

Our @DoW_USW_PR team remains focused on streamlining the reinstatement process, providing remedies, and driving accountability.

We continue to execute the key actions outlined in my Apr. 14, 2026 post and have since:

☑️ Established the COVID-19 Reinstatement and Reconciliation Task Force. Led by CDR Ameian Jeremiah, this Task Force is doing an incredible job bringing our warriors back into formation.

☑️ Launched a COVID-19 AAR Panel to supplement the NAPA assessment with @KacyJDixon leading its critical efforts, providing transparency and accountability.

☑️ Directed the MILDEPs to ensure their Review Boards evaluate the records of any former Service member who voluntarily left service—and who now requests to return—to determine whether they were unjustly discharged.

We will not rest until we right wrongs, restore honor, and rebuild trust with the affected community.
