DOD Orders

Reforming the Promotion System at DOD

By Stu Scheller, Marine Veteran, former LTC now Pentagon official

I just filmed a video with the Secretary of Defense, the Honorable Pete Hegseth.

His genius has not yet been identified by most. But it is clear to anyone watching that his intelligence, courage, and most of all leadership, provides the change so desperately needed across the Force.

The Secretary understands that archaic systems prevent adaptation, innovation, and most of all, performance.

Without forcing adaptation to a changing environment, systems, like individuals or organizations, develop rigid patterns, regulations, and processes, binding them to the past while stifling innovation. This leads to decreased effectiveness, slower decision-making, and ultimately, declining performance.

In these systems, common sense is risky, and creativity is downright dangerous. Employees learn that the goal is not to produce results, please customers, or save taxpayers’ money, but to avoid mistakes. Those who dare to innovate do so quietly. Well… maybe not all of them.

Objectively identifying and developing military officer talent is perhaps the most important thing we can do for a generation. It will be the difference in the next big war. People, ideas, and things. In that order.

So you want to lead a military into war? Show US.

We can’t ALL be wrong.
