The Naval War College (NWC) trains military officers on warfighting strategies to keep America safe.
A focus on leftist ideology under the current NWC President, Rear Admiral Daryl Walker, is in direct violation of the Commander in Chief’s executive orders to eradicate harmful diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) narratives from the military.
Defense Secretary Hegseth should take a hard look at the woke leaders and professors at NWC.
RestoretheMilitary.com is a project of Restoration of America seeking to eradicate the military of harmful social justice agendas rather than a sole focus on warfighting. Not only are some senior military officers pushing political agendas, but civilian professors with harmful agendas have infiltrated military academic institutions.
Here are just a few of the worst leaders at NWC.
Naming Names
Doyle Hodges, Dean of Academics
Hodges has many published articles and podcasts that are in stark contrast of the vision of the current administration on military issues. He claimed that extremism in the military is a bigger problem than ensuring special operations forces are equipped to win. His solution? More bureaucracy and coordination with other government agencies for “data gathering.” It sounds like Hodges wants Big Brother to spy on Americans.
Hodges writes:
“Violent domestic extremism is a long-term problem, and extremism in the military could have a devastating effect on public trust in the armed forces. The military organizational response needs to acknowledge this and address it with one of the most potent tools in the military arsenal: bureaucracy.”
He further claimed:
“Countering violent domestic extremism promises to be an even more challenging bureaucratic problem than enabling the success of special operations forces. It will require intrusive data gathering and extensive coordination with other government agencies. Bureaucracies excel at establishing procedures, policies, and pathways for coordination — exactly the things that are needed to address the problem of violent domestic extremism in an enduring way rather than through a short-term, ad hoc fix like a task force.”
Hodges also claimed that “white nationalism” is a major problem in the military citing the far-left Southern Poverty Law center to back-up his claims.
Jeffrey Macris, Dean of the College of Leadership and Ethics
Macris proudly displays his Diversity & Inclusion certificate from Cornell on his bio page and pushes a DEI agenda. He published a 2023 case study on “Leading Across Cultures: Crafting a Curriculum to Improve Inclusiveness—A Service Academy Case Study.” This was a study on DEI efforts of the Naval Academy’s Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership.
Interestingly, Macris was the Deputy Director of the Stockdale center at the time of the study. He performed a case study of his own department—a fact he doesn’t disclose in his research paper.
At the end of the Stockdale Center’s 15-hour so-called ethics course, students were required to assess how they facilitated “small group conversations related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion topics.”
Hayat Alvi, Associate Professor of National Security Affairs
Alvi’s view of national security issues don’t align with the current administration, especially regarding Israel.
In a 2023 lecture at NWC just days after the Hamas terror attack against Israel, Alvi was very critical of Israel—claiming Netanyahu was guilty of crimes against humanity. She said Israel’s attacks in Gaza were for “revenge.” Throughout her lecture Alvi placed Israel on the same level as Hamas and claimed both are at fault for the attacks. She also has multiple social media posts pushing anti-Israel propaganda.
Alvi’s criticism doesn’t end with Israel, she equated Southern Baptists with the Taliban saying, “Both the Taliban and the Southern Baptists employ the ‘lessons’ of biology and scripture to ‘prove’ women’s inferiority.” She further claimed, “All these misogynistic ideologies and attitudes stem from a principal psychological factor in religiously orthodox male-dominated societies: the actual fear of females.”
These are just a few examples of ideologues infiltrating military educational institutions. More information on these leaders and others can be found at RestoretheMilitary.com.
Irresponsible Leadership Embedded DEI Everywhere at NWC
With woke leadership at the helm of the NWC for at least the last nine years, it’s not surprising that NWC employs people such as Alvi, Macris, Hodges, and more. Current President, Adm. Darryl Walker was once a Diversity Director for the Navy and the 2024–25 NWC course catalog states they embrace diversity and inclusiveness.
Walker’s predecessor, Adm. Shoshana Chatfield, worked to “diversify the faculty” at NWC and hired a DEI Director when she was President. Chatfield was fired from her NATO job in April 2025.
Prior to Chatfield, Adm. Jeffrey Harley ran the school from 2016–2019 but was removed after allegations of administrative misconduct. Harley was ultimately cleared of most charges but it’s documented that his efforts increased diversity hirings at NWC.
Restoration of America shares the problems and solutions in military education in more detail at RestoretheMilitary.com. The defense department must take a deep dive into the organizations providing professional military education such as the Naval War College and overhaul them to focus solely on warfighting.
