John Frankman, who was forced out of Army over COVID vaccine, wants to fill Gaetz's seat

While many candidates are considering running to replace Rep. Matt Gaetz in Congress, Destin resident John Frankman is the first candidate to declare he’s officially running and launch a public-facing campaign.

Frankman announced his candidacy Thursday night on his X account with the launch of a campaign website.

Who is John Frankman?

Frankman is former U.S. Army Captain and Green Beret. He was voluntarily separated from the military for refusing to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Northwest Florida deserves a leader who will unapologetically stand up for our conservative values and keep our voice front and center in Congress,” Frankman said in his announcement on his website.

“I was proud to serve my country in the Special Forces, and I am ready to serve again in Washington. I’ll work tirelessly to defend our freedoms, support President Trump’s agenda, and put Americans First.”

Frankman served eight years in the U.S. Army before he was forced out for refusing to take the COVID-19 vaccine, and since then has advocated against the military’s vaccine policy, calling for reparations for service members who were forced out over the issue.

Connection to Gaetz

Gaetz has spoken out against the military’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate, and he partnered with Frankman to highlight the issue earlier this year by inviting Frankman to be his official guest at the 2024 State of the Union Address.

Gaetz also had Frankman on his “Firebrand” podcast in March.

On his campaign website, Frankman said his decision to refuse the vaccine was his proudest moment in uniform.

“Taking that stand reinforced my commitment to fight for Americans’ rights and freedoms,” Frankman said.
