Gender and Resilience Wargame hosted at NATO HQ

What?? At first this looked like a headline from the Babylon Bee, but no, it’s actually from NATO, yikes. Oh the days of worrying about Soviet communist invasion of Europe.

(Press Release) On 28 Mar 2024, a project team from the NATO-Wide Executive Development Programme (NEDP), sponsored by the IMS Office of the Gender Advisor, conducted a wargame on the link between the Gender Perspective and resilience.

The wargame challenged participants to apply a whole-of-society approach to resilience in order to gain a greater understanding of the intricacies of conflict dynamics and enhance perseverance in abstract terms.

Participants included experts across the Alliance from NATO HQ, ACO and ACT in resilience, gender and other areas of the Alliance to allow for a well-rounded approach.

Natalia Wojtowicz and Clara Tonecker from the Hague University of Applied Sciences developed and conducted the wargame, which had players work through an interactive model with a scenario-variable simulation to understand the complementary nature of the Gender Perspective to the seven baseline requirements of resilience.

The results of this wargame will inform the final report from the NEDP Gender and Resilience Project.

The NEDP Gender and Resilience Project is one of four projects for the 15th Cycle of the flagship NATO-Wide Executive Development Programme. It is supported by a team of 6 NATO-wide staff members.

The team will research, analyse, generate and evaluate options to help the IMS GENAD and NATO understand the options to address this challenge.

Following the completion of their project, the NEDP Gender and Resilience Team will present their findings at the 2024 Annual NATO Committee on Gender Perspectives Conference.

The NATO Executive Development Programme is a prestigious professional development programme that aims to build a collaborative network of international civilians from across the Alliance, and help them develop together as a team.

This unique programme is made up of a combination of four online phases, and five residential courses hosted by four different NATO bodies and provides strategic-level management courses on political, military, leadership and diplomatic subjects.
