An Ignominious End: Gen Milley pardoned by Biden; Portrait pulled from Pentagon

And on his first day in office, President Trump fired Milley off a government council. One only needs a pardon if they are guilty of something wrong.

The Pentagon has removed a portrait of Mark Milley, a retired Army general and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, only 10 days after it was unveiled.

This move was made just after President Donald Trump’s inauguration.

A Pentagon spokesperson confirmed to the Daily Caller that the portrait had been removed but deferred comment to the White House.

The Daily Caller also reached out to the White House for comment, but they did not respond in time for publication.

In one of his final acts as president, Joe Biden issued preemptive pardons to Milley and several others in order to guard against potential “revenge” from the new Trump administration.

“General Milley served our nation for more than 40 years, serving in multiple command and leadership posts and deploying to some of the most dangerous parts of the world to protect and defend democracy,” he said. “As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, he guided our Armed Forces through complex global security threats and strengthened our existing alliances while forging new ones.”

In a statement to USA Today, Milley said he was “deeply grateful” for his pardon.

Milley has been criticized for the withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021. He and other officials were accused of inadequate preparation and a failure to anticipate such a swift resurgence of the Taliban.

Trump has said “Milley is a loser who shamed us in Afghanistan and elsewhere!”

Milley spoke during March 2024 House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing intended to assess the Biden administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan. “To all veterans of Afghanistan, hold your heads high … Each of you did what the country asked of you under extreme circumstances,” he testified.

He also said it was the “consistent assessment of him and other high-ranking officers that the “withdrawal of the military forces and the contractors and the NATO forces that went with it would ultimately” lead to the collapse of the Afghan National Security Forces and the government.

Milley has said a delay in the U.S. State Department calling for a noncombatant evacuation operation (NEO) contributed to the debacle, according to CNN. The State Department has not conceded that it inappropriately delayed asking for the armed forces to start an NEO.

The former general also defended critical race theory (CRT) instruction to U.S. military servicemembers in testimony to Congress in June 2021. “On the issue of critical race theory … I do think it’s important for those of us in uniform to be open-minded and be widely read … And I want to understand white rage,” Milley said.

He has been featured as a speaker by the Harry Walker Agency, the same firm that represents Hillary Clinton, The Intercept first reported in March 2024. Hillary has reportedly received approximately $200,000 per speech.
