Comment about this article from STARRS Chairman Lt Gen. Rod Bishop, USAF ret, USAFA ’74:
Another win for STARRS, parents, cadets, those who love our nation and those we stood strong against the indoctrination efforts that were blatant in the last administration!
The article below is background on of some of STARRS activities–the subject matter has some STARRS fingerprints on it (we have assisted MMA grads and parents who were incensed with the DEI invasion at their school as we were at ours.) The article details the success of our (“collective we” as I call it) efforts.
By the way, if you don’t have time to read the entire article and the articles at the links (and didn’t know)–here is one paragraph in a story behind one of the links:
“After Duffy’s recent visit to the academy and midshipmen advocating to bring the Christ on the Water painting out of the basement, the Christian Post reported that an anti-Christian activist, Mikey Weinstein, referred to the Christian midshipmen as “Christian nationalist insects” and “cowards.” Weinstein was the activist Nunan bowed to regarding the removal of the painting. Shamefully, Nunan remained silent when the integrity and faith of the honorable midshipmen at her school were attacked.”
The “honorary” general that the Gazette has gone to for quotes (without seemingly an attempt to be balanced) on things from the vaccine mandate, to the civilian instructor overage challenge at USAFA, to the transgender issue is on the BOD of Mikey Weinstein’s organization, MRFF. STARRS, too, has weathered attacks from the MRFF that we have chosen just to ignore as to not give such an anti-Christian organization any more publicity than they already have.
Service Academy’s Woke Leadership Removed
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent canned on graduation day.
By Victoria Manning | Restoration News
Shortly after the 2025 U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) graduation ceremonies on Sunday, June 23rd, top leadership at USMMA exited.
Sources told Restoration News that Superintendent Vice Admiral Joanna Nunan and Deputy Superintendent Rear Admiral David M. Wulf were relieved of duty.
On June 24th, the Department of Transportation announced their departure.
While the Transportation Department didn’t pronounce that the leaders were fired, Restoration News obtained a text message sent by Admiral Nunan’s husband that confirms it was not Nunan’s choice to leave. Tom Nunan wrote:
“Earlier this evening, the Department of Transportation released the news that they plan to move ahead after a change in leadership at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. It’s been agony having to guard this secret for the past two weeks. Joanna and I are very sad at the idea of leaving Kings Point.”
There is no lack of cause for these removals—parents, midshipmen, and alumni applaud that these leaders are no longer in charge.
Brooke Garrison, USMMA alumna and parent of a recent graduate, told Restoration News that she is “very thankful Nunan is gone.”
Garrison said, “Joanna Nunan started implementing her woke agenda from day one.”
When a radical activist pushed to have the historic painting of Jesus removed, Nunan quickly obeyed.
When the same activist called USMMA midshipmen “Christian nationalist insects,” Garrison said that “Nunan remained silent and failed to defend the Christians under her leadership which is despicable of a leader of a service academy.”
Garrison also revealed that Nunan failed to spend millions of dollars set aside for infrastructure modernization and quality of life issues such as mold, a lack of hot water, and crumbling buildings.
Restoration News has actively reported on leadership problems at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA). F
ormer Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg appointed Superintendent Nunan, and upon taking over she immediately began implementing her woke agenda. We detail the controversial actions that most likely led to her downfall on our new site: RestoreTheMilitary.com.
Joanna Nunan received letters of concern from members of Congress, including from Senator Ted Cruz and former Rep. and now Sen. Jim Banks. They demanded answers regarding Nunan’s controversial hiring of an anti-Christian, racist sexual assault prevention director who posted his radical views on social media.
The legislators also demanded answers about Nunan’s policy to exempt midshipmen who identified as transgender during their third or fourth year at USMMA to receive a medical waiver from their obligated service.
No response from Nunan to Cruz or Banks was ever documented. These are just a few of the issues that likely led to her demise.
Secretary Duffy and President Trump Making USMMA Great Again
USMMA is one of the nation’s five federal service academies. It prepares midshipmen to serve as licensed Merchant Marine officers or commissioned officers in the Armed Forces.
Nunan did not have the qualifications to serve as the Superintendent of this prestigious academy. Her previous job was head of human resources and diversity, equity, and inclusion at the Coast Guard Academy. Her resume lacked the leadership experience necessary to head up a merit-based institution training future military officers and mariners.
Current Transportation Secretary Duffy was the commencement speaker at the USMMA graduation ceremony on June 23rd and he called out the leadership problems at the school. He highlighted the perseverance of the graduates who dealt with deplorable conditions at the academy and promised to rebuild the infrastructure. Duffy also condemned the placement of the Christ on the Water painting in the moldy, humid basement.
In April, Pres. Trump issued an executive order “Restoring America’s Military Dominance” which focuses on improving shipbuilding and the maritime workforce. The bi-partisan SHIPS for America Act of 2025 is being considered by Congress now and will include infrastructure spending to support USMMA improvements.
The USMMA motto is Acta Non Verba—Deeds Not Words—and Secretary Duffy should be commended for taking decisive action to remove these failed leaders and for making USMMA great again.
