Milley says canceling drag show on military base was ‘absolute right thing to do’

Gen. Mark Milley, the nation’s highest ranking military officer, defended the Pentagon’s decision to cancel a drag show on a U.S. Air Force base, calling it the “absolute right thing to do” in an interview Monday with CNN.

Milley said he backed Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s cancellation of a drag show that was scheduled for last week at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, saying they both shared concerns about the event taking place on a military installation.

“I think it is the absolute right thing to do,” he told CNN’s Oren Liebermann in Normandy, France, ahead of the 79th anniversary of D-Day.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff also said drag shows “were never part of DOD policy to begin with and they’re certainly not funded by federal funds.” . . . . (read more on The Hill)

And argued that the military is focused on “fighting and winning on battlefields” and is “all about readiness” both now and in the future through modernization.

Pentagon says it does not support drag shows on military installations: ‘longstanding policy’ (Fox News, 8 JUN 23)
The U.S. Department of Defense does not support hosting drag shows at military installations and facilities, according to a DOD spokesperson.

Pentagon press secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder was asked during a press briefing Thursday about a policy rolled out by the Pentagon aimed at banning drag shows on military installations. . . .

. . . .”As you well know, those of you who’ve covered DOD, we conduct special observance months to recognize the continuous achievements of all Americans into American culture for increased awareness, mutual respect and understanding to include Pride month,” Ryder said. “When it comes to drag shows, however, you know, I would take exception.”

He said it has been a “longstanding policy” that the DOD will not host drag events at U.S. military installations or facilities.

We became aware of the drag events during an April congressional hearing, that there were drag events scheduled to take place at DOD installations and facilities,” he said. “And so, again, the secretary advised that the department will not host such events.” . . .  . (read more)
