Air Force & Space Force announce “sweeping changes”

With the real threat of war with the PRC and other “great powers” breathing down their necks, DEI gets tossed out the window and there is a re-focus on military readiness and the warfighter ethos. Hopefully all the political commissars will be given the boot too.

From the Air Force:

AF, SF announce sweeping changes to maintain superiority (12 FEB 24)
The Department of the Air Force’s senior civilian and military leaders, Feb. 12, unveiled sweeping plans for reshaping, refocusing, and reoptimizing the Air Force and Space Force to ensure continued supremacy in those domains while also better posturing the services to deter and, if necessary, prevail in an era of Great Power Competition.

Taken together, the changes made public Feb. 12 and endorsed by Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall, Performing the Duties of Acting Under Secretary Kristyn Jones, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin and Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman represent one of the most extensive recalibrations in recent history for the Air Force and Space Force.

“Today, we are announcing 24 key decisions that are going to address the current force and our ability to stay competitive,” Kendall said in announcing the changes and the rationale behind them. “We need these changes now; we are out of time to reoptimize our forces to meet the strategic challenges in a time of Great Power Competition.”

While the changes feature a mix of near-term and longer-term initiatives, senior leaders emphasized the need for speed. “We are out of time,” Kendall said repeatedly in urging action on the changes. . . . .

Reading through the press release and all the related documents (below), the word “diversity” or the Soviet slogan “diversity is our strength” were nowhere to be found. No pandering, no newspeak, no warm and fuzzy softness, just the cold stark reality that changes need to be made so the Air Force and Space Force are made ready for war—or the country will be defeated.

When it comes to down to facing the brink of war, the CRT/DEI agenda push is a great big waste of time, people are turned off by it and/or just ignore it.

If the AF and SF are really serious about the need to change to war readiness, let’s hope no one has to take out valuable time to attend an “unconscious bias” training course or have a struggle session about privileges or take a whole month to celebrate what someone does in the privacy of their bedroom. Especially since the enemy they face doesn’t bother with this nonsense.

In this document, Reoptimizing for Great Power Competition (pdf), phrases include:

  • Develop “Mission Ready Airmen” with training focused on a mix of skills needed for wartime operational mission readiness.
  • Continue to transform leadership development and training at USAFA, OTS and ROTC to prepare new officers to effectively lead Airmen and Guardians in the context of Great Power Competition.

In this document, The Case for Change: Optimizing the Air Force for Great Power Competition (pdf), phrases include

  • ….Equally important is building a dedicated workforce to ensure we attract, train, and retain the best.
  • ….reinvigorating our warrior ethos to create Mission Ready Airmen
  • ….education and training focused on understanding threats, Mission Command, the Air Force’s role in defending against those threats
  • Leveraging our nation’s top talent will prove to be a decisive advantage in the era of Great Power Competition.
  • …. realigning from functional readiness to mission readiness, prioritizing mission-focused assessments and inspections
  • ….the Air Force will prioritize support critical to combat mission effectiveness. This will ensure the support capabilities most relevant to readiness, and important to the combat mission, are prioritized for resourcing.
  • …We must “reoptimize” our Service into an enterprise prepared for high-end conflicts and long-term strategic competition.

The last line says, “We’re out of time . . . we have to follow through now.” Maybe they should have thought about that earlier before implementing woke policies that have negatively affected recruitment, morale and retention.
